Save on the journey to work

Commuter Accounts

An employer-sponsored commuter account lets employees set aside pre-tax funds for qualified mass-transit, van-pooling and parking expenses associated with commuting to work.

What Expenses Are Eligible?

Commuter benefits can help employees pay eligible transportation expenses with convenient payroll deductions.

Mass Transit

Eligible expenses may include transit passes, tokens, fare cards, vouchers or similar items for public or privately operated bus, rail and ferry transportation.

Van-Pooling

A qualifying commuter highway vehicle generally seats at least seven adults, including the driver, and must satisfy applicable mileage and occupancy requirements.

Parking

Eligible parking may be located at or near the workplace or a location used to continue the commute by carpool, van-pool or mass transit. Parking at or near the employee’s home does not qualify.

Why Enroll?

Using pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible transit and parking expenses can reduce taxable wages and put money back in an employee’s budget. Federal income and payroll tax treatment generally provides the savings; state tax treatment can vary.

Balances may carry forward, and participants can generally adjust, begin or end their contribution elections according to the employer’s plan procedures.

2026 limit: $340 per month Separate monthly limits apply to qualified transit/van-pooling and qualified parking.

How Does It Work?

Commuter accounts make it straightforward to set aside and use funds for qualified transportation expenses.

Choose an Amount

Authorize your employer to deduct a pre-tax amount from each paycheck, up to the applicable monthly IRS limit.

Pay for Your Commute

Use the benefit debit card for eligible transit or parking expenses when the merchant and transaction qualify.

Request Reimbursement

When permitted by the plan, pay an eligible expense out of pocket and submit a claim for reimbursement.
