What Is an HSA?
A Health Savings Account is available to eligible individuals covered by an HSA-qualified high-deductible health plan. Employees, employers or both may contribute, subject to annual IRS limits. HSA funds can be used tax-free for qualified medical expenses, including many deductible, copayment, prescription, dental and vision expenses. Unused funds remain in the account, can earn interest or be invested when permitted, and stay with the account owner when employment changes.

Benefits That Continue Over Time
An HSA combines immediate access to healthcare funds with long-term saving potential.
$1,000 Catch-Up Contribution
Eligible individuals age 55 or older may generally contribute an additional $1,000 annually.
Funds Carry Forward
Unused HSA funds remain available from year to year and belong to the account holder.
Flexible Use After Age 65
Qualified medical withdrawals remain tax-free. Other withdrawals are generally taxable but are no longer subject to the additional 20% HSA penalty.
A Note About Medicare Premiums
After age 65, HSA funds may generally be used tax-free for eligible Medicare premiums, including Medicare Part B, Part D and Medicare Advantage premiums. HSA funds cannot be used tax-free to pay Medicare Supplement (Medigap) premiums.
